Archbishop José H. Gomez was unexpectedly presented with an Archbishop’s Award during the annual awards dinner on April 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The event, typically dedicated to honoring Catholics for distinguished service to the Los Angeles community, saw organizers reverse tradition by recognizing Gomez himself for his years of leadership.

Bishop Marc V. Trudeau presented the award at the conclusion of this year’s gala. “People say that the praise of praiseworthy people is praise indeed,” said Trudeau. “And I know the Archbishop doesn’t like to be praised. But this year, he celebrates 25 years as a bishop. And we have been lucky enough to have had him as our Archbishop for 15 years.”

After receiving a standing ovation, Gomez addressed attendees about his experience leading what he described as “the largest archdiocese in the country.” He said, “I’ve been here for 16 years and been the Archbishop for 15 years, and so many wonderful things have happened… so it’s a little work out there.”

The dinner also honored four individuals—David Fuhrman, Kevin Shannon, Joseph “Pep” Valdes, Karla Ahmanson—and one couple: Bob Graziano and Wendy Watchell. Each honoree was recognized for contributions ranging from philanthropy and community service to support of Catholic education and charitable organizations.

Among those highlighted were Valdes’ leadership roles in Catholic organizations and Ahmanson’s work with local police foundations; Shannon’s ongoing support of religious vocations in Guatemala; Fuhrman’s transition from finance to foundation work supporting students; and Graziano and Watchell’s combined impact in sports administration and philanthropy.

The black-tie gala has been a Los Angeles tradition for more than three decades, serving both as an occasion to celebrate local Catholic leaders and raise funds for charitable causes.

As chair of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission, Bob Graziano has helped secure major events such as an upcoming World Cup match and Super Bowl in Los Angeles. The event concluded with remarks acknowledging all honorees’ commitment to service within their communities.
