Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell is headed back to the injured list after making just one start, according to a May 15 announcement. The left-handed pitcher has been diagnosed with loose bodies in his left elbow, an injury that could require a significant recovery period.
The news is important for the Dodgers as Snell was expected to be a key part of their pitching rotation this season. His absence comes shortly after being activated and making his first appearance of the year against the Atlanta Braves on May 9, where he pitched three innings and allowed four runs.
Snell has been placed on the 15-day injured list since May 12, which means he will not be eligible to return until at least May 27. In response, the Dodgers have activated left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes, who was recently acquired from the Chicago Cubs, to take Snell’s place on the roster.
This is not the first time Snell has dealt with loose bodies in his elbow; he previously faced a similar issue in 2019 that caused him to miss more than two months of play. The injury is also similar to what closer Edwin Diaz recently experienced and required surgery for. “Dave Roberts has left the door open to surgery, but expected Snell to be back ‘this year,'” said Nelson Espinal in a statement shared on social media.
Snell’s recent injury history includes shoulder discomfort dating back to late last season. He took a cautious approach during spring training and made several minor league rehabilitation appearances before returning for postseason play last year. Despite hopes that he would remain healthy through this season, his current status means he will be sidelined at least until late May while undergoing further rehab.
The broader impact of Snell’s absence may affect how the Dodgers manage their pitching staff over coming weeks as they monitor his recovery and consider potential surgical options.
