Dr. Farhad Sigari, an ENT specialist at Del Rey MD, has highlighted the connection between inflammation in the maxillary sinuses and upper tooth pain. This issue can sometimes lead patients to visit a dentist before realizing the pain is sinus-related. Sigari made this statement on Instagram on March 6.

“Pain in the teeth is potentially related to the sinuses, usually if it’s involving the upper teeth,” said Sigari, Doctor, according to Instagram. “The upper teeth are situated below your maxillary cheek sinuses, and if there’s significant inflammation in the bottom of your sinus, that could also cause some sensitivity in the teeth. We get a lot of referrals from patients who may be seeing a dentist and have some pain in their tooth, but the dentist has checked it and the tooth is okay. At that point, we can evaluate it, get a scan of the sinuses, and make sure there’s no infection or inflammation around that area.”

According to the University of Cincinnati, sinus infections, particularly those affecting the maxillary sinuses located above the upper teeth, can cause referred pain that mimics a toothache. This occurs because pressure and congestion from inflamed sinuses can impact nerves serving both the sinus and teeth, leading to discomfort in the upper molars. Such cases often result in patients consulting dentists, even though the origin of the pain is sinus-related.

Distinguishing between tooth pain caused by dental issues and that referred from sinusitis can be challenging. Both conditions may present with similar symptoms, such as localized pain and tenderness. The University of Cincinnati notes that comprehensive evaluation by both dental and ENT specialists is often necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause.

Del Rey MD states that Dr. Farhad Sigari is a board-certified otolaryngologist specializing in diagnosing and treating sinus-related conditions, including those presenting with dental pain.
