Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 34th district since 2017, recently expressed his concerns on social media regarding certain policies and their impact on working families. The tweets, posted over two days in May 2025, address tax policies, social aid programs, and tariffs.

On May 17, Gomez shared his thoughts about Republican policy proposals that he claims would adversely affect low-income individuals. He stated “Republicans want to raise taxes on people making under $30K, cut their Medicaid and food aid, and then tell them to have more kids.” Drawing from personal experience of working at Subway and Target for wages slightly above minimum without healthcare benefits, Gomez questioned the necessity of providing more assistance to billionaires rather than those earning less.

Later that day, Gomez commented on the fiscal actions taken by Republicans who hold power in Congress and the White House. He remarked “What do you call it when Republicans—who control Congress and the White House—raise taxes on working families while cutting billions from Medicaid and SNAP?” He characterized these actions not as negotiations but as “hostage taking.”

On May 18, Gomez criticized tariffs imposed during Donald Trump’s presidency. He tweeted “Trump’s tariffs are a tax on parents.” Citing increased costs for essential baby products like strollers and car seats due to these tariffs, he challenged the notion of being pro-family while raising expenses for working families.

Gomez has been an active voice in Congress since succeeding Xavier Becerra in 2017. Born in Orange County in 1974 and currently residing in Los Angeles, he graduated with a BA from UCLA.
