Rep. Jimmy Gomez, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 34th district, has expressed his critical views on former President Trump’s trade policies through a series of tweets. Gomez, who replaced Xavier Becerra in 2017 and previously served in the California State Assembly from 2012 to 2017, addressed the economic impact of tariffs implemented during Trump’s administration.

On May 12, 2025, Rep. Gomez questioned the effectiveness of Trump’s tariffs by stating “If Trump’s tariffs were such a win, why hit pause now? The truth is they backfired and the damage is still ongoing.” He referenced a report from @The_Budget_Lab indicating that families would incur an additional $2,800 expense this year due to these tariffs.

Later that day, he highlighted his visit to the Port of Los Angeles to observe firsthand how these tariffs are affecting jobs and increasing costs. He remarked “Trump launched a trade war without a clue — now working families are paying the price.”

In another tweet posted on May 12, Rep. Gomez criticized what he described as deceptive pricing tactics similar to those used by oil companies. He commented on tariff adjustments with China saying “He raised China tariffs to 145%, then ‘cut’ them to 30%. He claims a win, but either way, you’re still getting screwed.”

Born in Orange County in 1974 and currently residing in Los Angeles, Gomez graduated from UCLA with a BA degree.
