WASHINGTON, DC – On April 26, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) voted against Republicans’ Default on America Act, legislation that would impose harsh cuts on vital programs that Californians rely on every day while also placing the country at risk for default.              “

Republicans’ shameful plan is not only reckless, but puts the well-being of California’s families at risk by slashing the programs that people need to keep them sheltered, safe, and alive,” said Rep. Kamlager-Dove. “We’re talking about keeping food on the table, providing access to childcare for our kids, and ensuring our people don’t lose access to health care. These are real issues, and this bill is a distraction from our work to pass a clean debt limit that ensures America can pay its bills on time. I will not vote against the needs of the 37th District, and I will continue to fight against extremist, negligent policies that harm my communities back home.

By refusing to act now to prevent a default, House Republicans are threatening an economic disaster that will devastate families in California. Specifically, in California’s 37th District, an extreme MAGA Republican default on our debt would:

  • Kill 7,500 jobs as unemployment doubles;
  • Threaten the retirement savings of 91,400 people near retirement;
  • Put Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs health benefits at risk for 369,000 people; and
  • Jeopardize Social Security payments for 62,000 seniors.

But the Default On America Act is no alternative. In California, the extreme House Republican scheme would:

  • Put 2,673,000 people at risk of losing Medicaid coverage;
  • Threaten access to food assistance for 136,000 people aged 50-55;
  • Eliminate preschool and child care for at least 35,200 children;
  • Increase housing costs for at least 83,200 people; and
  • Make college more expensive for at least 874,300 students.

House Democrats have already cut the deficit by historic levels, and President Biden’s budget reduces deficits by $3 trillion more over the next 10 years while investing in America – lowering costs by making child care, health care, and housing more affordable, supporting better schools, and strengthening our infrastructure.
