WASHINGTON, DC – On June 19, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement commemorating Juneteenth:

“Nearly 160 years after the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were freed, I join in celebrating Juneteenth with communities in the 37th District and across the country.

“Years later, policies and rhetoric aimed at sanitizing Black stories persist. But to recognize Juneteenth is also to recognize the vestiges of slavery and racism that still exist today in our nation. I hope today we can celebrate, honor, and learn from our history. Black history. American history.

“Slavery may have fallen over 200 years ago, but Black Americans are still fighting for a fuller democracy. Justice for our communities, better health care and access to care – especially in the post Roe era, stronger voting rights in every state, protection from the disproportionate impact of climate change, and more equitable gains from our economy. These are just some of the things I will always fight for alongside my Congressional Black Caucus colleagues in the House.

“I hope that this day serves as a reminder of the unfinished work we must continue to dismantle the dark legacy of racism in our country. Today we celebrate, but tomorrow the fight continues.”
