WASHINGTON, DC – On June 30, 2023, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis to restrict equality for LGBTQ+ Americans:

“Pride Month is meant to be a celebration of LGBTQ+ love, acceptance, and contributions to our country, but today’s decision by this activist Court is a blow to the LGBTQ+ community. In their ruling, they have fanned the flames of hate, division, and bigotry.

“The Court is facing a legitimacy crisis. This ruling only serves to underscore how out-of-step the Supreme Court is with the values of the American people. We desperately need to reform our Court to ensure it accurately reflects a standard of objectivity for the people it serves.

“Our nation was founded on principles of liberty and justice for all, but this ruling makes it apparent that these tenets only apply to some. Just last year, the Respect for Marriage Act enshrined the right to same-sex marriage into law. With today’s ruling, we know individuals from protected classes, like sexual orientation, will continue to face discrimination and prejudice. As a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, I take the threats toward our LGBTQ+ community seriously. We need to enact legislation like the Equality Act to ensure that all Americans are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
