WASHINGTON, DC – On June 15, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of upholding the Indian Child Welfare Act:

“I am glad to see that the Court sided with the will of the people in their decision to protect the Indian Child Welfare Act today. I join Tribal organizations in celebrating this win for Tribal sovereignty and self-governance. It is critical that Indigenous children live in homes where their culture and traditions are uplifted so they can foster connection with members of their Tribe and ancestral background.

“As a fierce advocate for our children and Co-Chair of the Foster Youth Caucus, I support rulings like this that place the well-being of the child first. In April, I introduced the Tribal Family Fairness Act with Congresswoman Davids (KS-03) and Congressman Bacon (NE-02) to address the disproportionate representation of American Indian and Alaska Native children in foster care and invest in Tribal child welfare systems to provide culturally appropriate services to preserve Tribal families.

“I’m hopeful that this ruling will ensure more Tribal families can be reunited to allow for the continued recognition of their culture and heritage, and I will continue to advocate for our children in Congress.”
