ASHINGTON, DC – On May 25, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement on the third anniversary of George Floyd’s murder:

“For Black communities across the country, the words ‘I can’t breathe’ are forever etched in our consciousness. Today, I remember the horrific murder of George Floyd. His death sparked new but all-too-familiar conversations about the need to address the culture of police brutality and the elusiveness of racial justice.

“Black Americans deserve answers to the violence that generations of our families have experienced. From lynching to modern-day executions at the hands of police or civilian vigilantes, we are tired of living in a country where we are constantly perceived as a threat because of the color of our skin.

“We need federal legislation that will work to end racial profiling, ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, hold police officers accountable for misconduct, and reimagine what public safety looks like in our communities. Through these sorts of reforms we can finally end the systemic racism in policing because Black people deserve to be able to breathe.”
