WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled in Department of Education v. Brown and Biden v. Nebraska to deny President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness plan:
“This Supreme Court has again set millions of Americans back by denying the President’s authority to cancel federal student loans. This decision has put into jeopardy millions of financial futures, particularly harming low-income borrowers and borrowers of color.
“Under the HEROES Act of 2003, the Administration had clear legal authority to grant federal relief for student loans during the COVID-19 national emergency. Unfortunately, the conservative-leaning Court rendered a devastating decision in favor of Republicans and special interest groups, not the American people.
“With payments set to resume this Fall, over 40 million borrowers will be negatively impacted by this decision. Black, Brown, and Indigenous populations will continue to face greater financial burden, and families who have been desperately hoping for relief will again feel the pressure of a broken student loan system.
“The Court’s reputation continues to erode, and their legitimacy is cast in greater doubt after this week. I am outraged by the hypocrisy of some Justices who accept lavish gifts and expensive vacations while allowing American people to fall into greater economic peril. The Administration cannot give up, and I urge that they keep working to deliver on student loan relief.”
