The Los Angeles County Museum of Art announced on April 17 that its opening gala for the David Geffen Galleries raised nearly $11.5 million, setting a new fundraising record for the museum. The event, held on April 16, welcomed more than 820 guests from the creative and philanthropic communities of Los Angeles.
The funds raised will support the launch of the David Geffen Galleries, LACMA’s new building for its permanent collection designed by Peter Zumthor. The gala was presented by Genesis and also received support from East West Bank as part of its sponsorship of a series of opening events. Gucci, a long-time partner of LACMA, provided additional backing for the evening.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is recognized as the largest art museum in the western United States and offers research and conservation through its facilities, according to the official website. The museum includes multiple pavilions to provide diverse art experiences and holds more than 150,000 works spanning over 6,000 years according to LACMA.
LACMA focuses on delivering exhibitions, educational programs, and public events aimed at engaging a wide range of audiences according to its official website. In addition to these programs, it offers free admission for Los Angeles County residents after 3 p.m. on weekdays as stated by LACMA.
The institution features collections representing regions such as Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Islamic world according to LACMA’s official site. The opening of the David Geffen Galleries marks an important milestone in expanding access to these collections.
