As one of the top college sports in the United States, basketball is extremely popular alongside football, with top NCAA programs attracting strong fan followings and television ratings near those of the NBA. Events like March Madness bring in millions of viewers nationwide each year.

A recent federal settlement marked a turning point for college athletics, officially authorizing schools to share revenue directly with athletes for the first time. The settlement also mandates that the NCAA pay $2.8 billion over 10 years to former athletes dating back to 2016 for back damages.

By 2022, after extended legal and legislative challenges, student-athletes were also permitted to earn income from their names, images and likenesses thanks to state legislation and updated NCAA policies.

During fiscal year 2024, the NCAA brought in about $900 million from March Madness and related media rights for the Division I men’s basketball tournament, establishing basketball as its dominant source of revenue.
