Rep. Gomez Votes NO on Debt Limit Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 31 Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, voted against H.R. 3746, the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

“Congressional Republicans deserve full blame for trying to drive our country off a fiscal cliff and into a global economic catastrophe,” said Rep. Gomez. “House Republicans should have never been allowed to hold our nation’s economy hostage or put at risk the livelihoods, retirements, and small businesses of millions of people, which is why I pushed for invoking our Constitution’s 14th amendment to avoid default. While this bill keeps us from a disastrous Republican default, I cannot support it because it cuts programs that uplift working people and those most in need, tightens already burdensome requirements for food and nutrition programs, demolishes environmental safeguards, shovels even more money into an inflated and wasteful defense budget, and makes it easier for the ultra-wealthy to not pay their fair share in taxes. Democrats in Congress must continue to defend our country from Kevin McCarthy and his band of extremists, not bend to their nightmarish tactics and agenda. It’s time to abolish the debt ceiling so we are never put in this position again.”
