SAS splits into two pathways for students

Next semester, the School for Advanced Studies program plans to split into two pathways, STEAM and Interdisciplinary Arts.

Towards the end of ninth grade, students will have the choice between the two pathways. Besides ninth graders, it would also affect the upper grades.

STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math will primarily focus on science, math, and art. Interdisciplinary Arts will focus on English, history, and foreign language, according to Christina Dempsey, the co-lead teacher for SAS.

“Their electives are going to be geared towards one particular area, which is why we wait until the end of ninth grade, just so they can get their feet wet on what high school is like,” Dempsey said.

Loyda Santos Chelin, a sophomore said, “I feel like it’s going to be giving us a lot more opportunities but it’s also kind of stressful in a way considering that there’s many high schoolers that don’t even know what kind of career they want.”

The goal is for it to go into effect next year. “We’re actually meeting with Dovlatian next week to hopefully finalize it or move towards finalizing it,” said Dempsey. An assembly is planned on Feb. 14 to inform students about it.
