Election law expert Franita Tolson named dean of the USC Gould School of Law

Interim Dean and Professor Franita Tolson has been named the dean and Carl Mason Franklin Chair in Law of the USC Gould School of Law. Tolson, who is a nationally recognized figure in election law, voting rights, constitutional law, and legal history, expressed her enthusiasm for the new role, stating, "I feel inspired and excited for this opportunity."

Tolson is set to make history as the first Black dean and the second female dean in the USC Gould School of Law's history. USC President Carol Folt expressed her confidence in Tolson, stating, "We are pleased to have Franita Tolson as the next dean of the USC Gould School of Law."

Reflecting on Tolson's interim tenure, Folt commended her for promoting a culture of openness, understanding, and respect. Folt highlighted Tolson's student-centered approach and her national recognition for her scholarship in election law, constitutional law, and voting rights and access. Folt expressed optimism for Tolson's continued leadership, believing she will guide the school to greater heights.

Tolson, who has been serving as interim dean at USC Gould since 2023, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Before joining USC in 2017, Tolson held the Betty T. Ferguson Professor of Voting Rights position at Florida State University, where she made significant contributions.
