Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, who represents California’s 37th district in the U.S. Congress, recently used her social media platform to honor influential community leaders and commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
On January 18, Kamlager-Dove paid tribute to a mentor, stating, “Joy dedicated her life to mentoring hundreds of Black women, including me, to become the next generation of changemakers in our city. Her integrity, compassion, and leadership will continue to remind us what it truly means to fight for equity and justice. May she rest in power.”
The following day, she reflected on a recent church event: “Last Sunday, I joined Second Baptist Church in honoring the legacy of Senior Pastor Emeritus William Epps and welcoming Reverend James D. Key. It was a powerful reminder that faith and community can light the way during these challenging times in our nation.” This post highlighted her engagement with local faith-based communities.
On January 19, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Kamlager-Dove posted: “Happy MLK Day! As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I joined events across the community celebrating his life, legacy, and service. In these times, may we remember his message: the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”
Sydney Kamlager-Dove has served as a member of Congress since 2023 after replacing Karen Bass. She previously held positions in both the California State Assembly (2018-2021) and California Senate (2021-2023). Born in Chicago in 1972 and currently residing in Los Angeles, Kamlager-Dove graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in 1994.
