We heard you—Illegal dumping deteriorates the quality and appearance of Alhambra and endangers the health and wellbeing of our residents. 

Beginning April 1st, bulky item sweep service is being reinstated. Residents and businesses will be allowed to discard bulky items on their trash collection days with no prior scheduling required. See the press release for more information.

To account for this programmatic change and the costs associated with conducting such services, residential and commercial rates will be adjusted. Visit the Solid Waste & Recycling tab to see the rates commencing April 1st, 2023.

Until April 1, 2023, residents must call Republic Services at 1-800-299-4898 or contact by email alhambra@republicservices.com at least a day prior to putting bulky or electronics items on the curb.

What You Need to Know 

• Beginning April 1, 2023, residents and commercial businesses will be able to discard bulky items on their curb on their scheduled collection day—no prior scheduling with Republic Services is required.
• Do not place items on the curb before noon on the day preceding your regularly scheduled collection day, or you may receive a notice from the City's Code Enforcement Division to remove the items immediately.
• Bulky items must be placed curbside and not obstruct public right-of-way. Do not place items on the street or block sidewalks or driveways.
• Residents living in gated complexes must place bulky items at the curb or in the alley (driver will not be able to go beyond the gate).
• If you see illegal dumping or a bulky item not collected on your service day, please contact Republic Services at 1-800-299-4898 or alhambra@republicservices.com.  
• Do not place household hazardous waste (HHW) or certain electronic waste in your trash bin or curbside. Take such items to a Household Hazardous Waste collection event. Visit our HHW webpage to learn more.

Accepted Bulky Items

• Furniture: Chairs, sofas, mattresses, rugs, cabinets, futons, beds, box springs and tables.
• Appliances: Refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, water heaters, dishwashers, plumbing, small household appliances and other similar items, commonly known as "white goods."
• Electronic equipment: Stereos, televisions, computers and monitors, VCRs, microwaves and other similar items commonly known as "brown goods."
• Bundled wood waste.

Not Accepted Bulky Items

Illegal dumping of such items is subject to an administrative fine between $100-$500. Visit our HHW webpage to learn how to properly dispose these items.

• Industrial Waste: Car bodies; Tires; Construction and demolition debris,
• Lawn/Garden Care Products: Bug spray; Pesticide/ insecticide/herbicide; fertilizer; fungicide; weed killer.
• Paint and Paint-Related Products: Latex/water-based paint and oil-based paint; turpentine paint stripper; paint thinner; rust remover; varnish.
• Automotive Fluids and Batteries: Used motor oil and filters; kerosene; windshield washer solution; brake and transmission fluid; metal polish with solvent; gasoline and diesel fuel; auto body repair products; antifreeze; lead acid batteries.
• Beauty Products and Medicines: Alcohol-based lotions/isopropyl alcohol; medicine; hair relaxers, dyes and permanents; nail polish and nail polish remover; products in aerosol cans.
• Household Cleaners: Ammonia-based cleaners; floor care products; window cleaners; metal polish and cleaners; oven and drain cleaners; aerosol cleaners; furniture polish; tub, tile and toilet bowl cleaners.
• Miscellaneous Household Hazardous Waste: Fluorescent lights; photographic chemicals; shoe polish; swimming pool chemicals; glue; mercury thermometers; lighter fluid; fiberglass epoxy; moth balls; mercury batteries.
• Items requiring more than two persons to remove.

Donate Before you Waste!

Before discarding, consider donating or selling bulky items, such as furniture and appliances, to extend their life and give someone else a chance to enjoy them. Most major thrift stores will accept these items, but be sure to call ahead first.
