WASHINGTON, DC – On May 1, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage (AANHPI) Month:
“May marks the beginning of AANHPI month, where we recognize the amazing contributions that Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities have made to the nation.
“Los Angeles is fortunate to be home to a diverse array of Asian American communities. This month – and every day – we appreciate their rich cultural influences in our local economy, arts, entertainment, and so much more.
“This month also reminds us of how far we need to go to confront bigotry and hatred toward Asian Americans. It is disturbing that there has been a rise in xenophobic and racist attacks toward Asian Americans in the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. We must make clear that there is zero place for hate in Los Angeles and communities around the country. I commit to work with local leaders and my colleagues in Congress to ensure that AANHPI communities are celebrated and embraced the way they deserve. I hope that this month brings great joy, pride, and fulfillment to many in Los Angeles and the world."
