Mayor Karen Bass has announced her selection of Jim McDonnell as the new Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). This decision aligns with her focus on reducing crime and enhancing safety across all neighborhoods in Los Angeles.

“From the beginning, I have been clear: My top priority as mayor is to ensure that Angelenos and our neighborhoods are safer today than yesterday,” Mayor Bass stated. She expressed confidence in McDonnell's leadership abilities, describing him as "a leader, an innovator, and a change maker."

McDonnell brings over four decades of experience in public safety to his new role. He began his career at the LAPD Academy 43 years ago and has held senior executive positions in the three largest policing agencies in Los Angeles County. “It is a tremendous honor to lead the men and women of the LAPD," McDonnell said. He emphasized his commitment to supporting officers' efforts to keep residents safe.

His objectives include enhancing public safety, restoring LAPD staffing levels through recruitment and retention, strengthening public trust, developing community relationships, ensuring respectful policing practices, and preparing for future challenges.

Dr. Erroll Southers, President of the Los Angeles Police Commission, voiced support for Mayor Bass's choice. “The Los Angeles Police Commission stands with Mayor Bass and her firm commitment to reducing crime," he said. Dr. Southers also highlighted the importance of trust between law enforcement and communities.

Before making this announcement, Mayor Bass consulted with various stakeholders about their expectations for a new police chief. The City Council will now vote on whether to confirm McDonnell’s appointment.

McDonnell has previously served as Chief of Long Beach Police Department and was elected Sheriff of Los Angeles County in 2014. His tenure saw improvements in police-community relations and reductions in crime across these agencies.

He holds degrees from St. Anselm College and the University of Southern California and has completed executive education programs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
