A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:
Dear Friend,
This week closes out a three-week work period in Washington, and addressing our debt limit remains in question. I spoke on the House Floor multiple times this week to champion the needs of Angelenos as Republicans work against the will of the American people. Families in my district shouldn’t be put at risk because Republicans want to hold our economy hostage. Instead of working toward a good-faith deal that would avoid America defaulting on our obligations, House Republicans are proposing dangerous cuts to social programs in debt limit negotiations. What’s more, this week they brought bills to the Floor that make it harder for students to pay off their student loans and impose draconian mandatory minimums as a short-sighted solution to addressing our fentanyl crisis.
DEBT LIMIT
This week, I highlighted how harmful the Republicans' Default on America Act is for our economy, families across the nation, and our clean energy future. I voted against it on the House Floor last month because it would slash funding from the programs that people depend on to survive, like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. It would also create new work requirements for programs like SNAP – preventing vulnerable Angelenos from putting food on the table. In addition, it will halt progress in the clean energy sector and roll back achievements made under the historic Inflation Reduction Act. If Republicans have their way, they would undo millions of good paying jobs, investments in clean energy, and the promise of clean air and water for Americans across the country.

STUDENT LOAN RELIEF
President Biden's student loan forgiveness program was an incredible step toward educational equity for those working to attain higher education degrees. This week, Republicans chose to stand in the way again and block student debt relief. H.J.Res.45 will hurt 43 million Americans across the country, including 90,500 people in CA-37 alone. We should be doing everything we can to encourage education and economic mobility. And if Republicans don't want to help out, they should just get out of the way.

FENTANYL CRISIS
We are facing a crippling fentanyl epidemic across our nation, and Republicans' HALT Fentanyl Act does nothing to address this problem. Instead, it only serves to enact punitive and ineffective drug laws with draconian mandatory minimums that will disproportionately impact Black and Brown folks. We must combat the root issues of this crisis and move forward on legislation that addresses substance abuse while also saving lives.

HONORING TINA TURNER
On Thursday, I spoke on the House Floor to honor a constituent of the 37th — the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner. She passed away this week at the age of 83 after a career so bold and sparkling, we are unlikely to see another star so bright. Her voice, story, and her Buddhist values commanded attention and reflection from all of us, and her legacy paved the way for many artists today. She also exposed us to the realities of domestic violence and exemplified resilience for so many women across the world. This is a heartbreaking loss that leaves a hole in the soul of America.

NEW LEGISLATION
As a Co-Chair of the Foster Youth Caucus, I am proud to introduce the Foster Youth Dental Act with Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04). This legislation will expand Medicaid eligibility for our foster youth by providing more incentives for dental providers, increasing Medicaid enrollment opportunities, and preventing lapses in coverage. This legislation would ensure foster youth have access to proper oral health care while promoting greater health equity. As a champion for our children, I will continue to advocate for foster care system reform to ensure healthier lives and loving homes for our foster youth.
