Christopher Doan, a family nurse practitioner, advises individuals experiencing nose and throat issues to consult an ear, nose, and throat doctor (ENT). This recommendation encompasses conditions such as earwax impactions and sinusitis, which ENTs are equipped to treat. Doan made this statement on Instagram on February 20.

"Whenever they have any issues regarding your nose and throat, that's who we are," said Doan, according to Instagram. "Whether it comes from simple earwax impactions to nasal obstruction, see an ENT and especially us, we can treat you."

Doan's advice addresses common uncertainties regarding when to seek ENT care for nose and throat problems, a frequent concern in the field of otolaryngology. The American Academy of Otolaryngology notes that conditions like earwax impaction, nasal obstruction, and sinusitis often persist beyond self-care measures. Specialist evaluation using tools such as endoscopy or imaging is necessary in these cases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sinusitis affects approximately 28.9 million U.S. adults annually. This condition often leads to nasal obstruction and facial pain that prompt visits to ENT specialists. The prevalence of sinusitis, driven by infections or allergies, makes it a leading reason for specialist referrals. Treatments range from medications to in-office procedures, with chronic cases lasting over 12 weeks highlighting the need for expert care when symptoms resist initial management.

A study published in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery found that earwax impaction occurs in about 6% of the general population. If not addressed, it can cause hearing loss or discomfort. The 2017 clinical guideline update recommended safe removal by specialists using tools like microsuction—a method likely employed by Doan—rather than risking eardrum damage with home remedies like cotton swabs.
