With the School for Advanced Studies renovating itself to attract more students, I hope to see an increase in field trips. As the SLC for Advanced Studies, students shouldn’t be limited to textbooks and videos. Subjects such as history and science would benefit greatly if the curriculum was adjusted to include field trips.

Reading about an event in history can only do so much and places like museums offer first hand accounts, pictures, and a collection of artifacts which will help students engage with the subject better. To not go on field trips would be a waste of the various museums that are nearby, such as the Getty Center, the Natural History Museum, and the California Science Center.

While field trips would be greatly beneficial, they’re not considered essential and they would strain the school’s current budget. To fix this, the school should adjust its budget for the coming year. Teachers should also be encouraged to plan at least one field trip to accompany their teachings.

If SAS’s new focus is improving its enrollment, offering field trips would make it stand out. Unlike the other small learning communities, SAS’s defining factor is its more rigorous workload. To balance it out, a field trip on any subject would be a pleasant break and an opportunity for the students to bond.
