A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:

Dear Friend,

This week, I came back to Washington to address the debt limit, highlighted my recent trip to the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a part of the Presidential Delegation, and spoke out against anti-LGBTQ+ threats in Uganda as we prepare to celebrate Pride Month here in the U.S.

DEBT LIMIT

I spoke on the House Floor and to the LA Times to advocate for the needs of Angelenos. Though I am glad that the President worked to prevent America from defaulting, I was outraged by how Republicans hijacked our economy and put lives at risk. They came to the negotiating table willing to jeopardize the well-being of the American people and usurped our debt limit process to push through policies that hurt families in our District. I don't understand how Republicans can say they stand for the Republic when their actions say the opposite. As Vice Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I am disappointed by provisions they included that will roll back key environmental safeguards, harming our public health.

Additionally, this bill makes significant changes to SNAP and TANF that will unnecessarily harm older people who depend on these vital benefits to survive. Republicans also fought successfully to rescind funding from the IRS, preventing the agency from catching corporate tax cheats to make them pay their fair share, which is the antithesis of fiscal responsibility. While I am glad our nation avoided default and economic catastrophe, I am disheartened that it came at such a great cost to American families.

PRESIDENTIAL DELEGATION TO NIGERIA

As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I was honored to represent the U.S. as part of a Presidential Delegation to Nigeria for the Inauguration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Presidential Delegation was led by Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge and included seven other senior Administration officials. I am committed to strengthening U.S. engagement in Africa because investing in Africa’s future means investing in our own prosperity. This diplomatic mission was also a recognition of Nigeria’s rich cultural vibrancy, which will only continue to accelerate Nigeria’s economic growth and diplomatic weight. I look forward to supporting the Nigerian people in their fight for human rights, good governance, and youth and women’s empowerment.

PRIDE MONTH

Happy Pride to the LGBTQ+ community in CA37 and across the country! After seeing the horrific expansion of state-sanctioned repression against LGBTQ+ people and flagrant violation of international human rights law with Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, it is important to remember Pride is a time for joy and a celebration of love. As a member of the Equality Caucus, I stand against attacks on the LGBTQ+ community and will continue working to secure protections for all. No one should face threats on their lives for simply being themselves. I am looking forward to attending Pride events across my District in the coming days to take part in the festivities and spend time with community members.
