Dear Friend,
This month, I joined my Democratic Colleagues in raising awareness on National Gun Violence Awareness Month. I also joined our regional EPA Administrator Martha Guzman for an environmental justice convening and grants workshop. Back in Washington, my work amplifying the needs of our District continues. I joined Rep. Jimmy Gomez in launching the Congressional Renters Caucus, spoke on the House Floor to honor Caribbean Americans, and continued to call out Republicans for their dysfunction and inability to properly govern for the American people.
EPA ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CONVENING
EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Martha Guzman and I hosted an environmental justice meeting and grant workshop to preview the soon-to-launch Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Advisory Centers (EJ TCTACs). The new centers are administered by the EPA and will soon provide technical assistance, training, and other resources to underserved and overburdened communities throughout the nation, including those in Southern California. As a passionate environmental justice advocate, I cannot wait to see the benefits of these centers for communities in my District. In addition, Southern California residents will begin to see coastal restoration and the implementation of climate readiness tools on our coasts due to funding from these same pieces of legislation. Efforts like this one and the resource centers from the EPA are vital as we tackle the impacts of the climate crisis.
GUN VIOLENCE ROUNDTABLE
To promote the importance of gun violence reform during National Gun Violence Awareness Month, I hosted a gun violence prevention roundtable with local safety and gun violence prevention advocates at the Children’s Institute Inc. I want to thank those in attendance, especially the survivors and victims of gun violence, for their powerful insights. The terrifying regularity of gun violence has ripped apart families and communities, including those here in Los Angeles. Republican silence on this issue is tantamount to dismissing the deaths of thousands. It cannot stand. We need legislation that addresses unfettered access to guns across our nation and to continue to have conversations that shed light on the root causes of gun violence in our communities.

NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Gun violence has become a terrifying reality for too many Americans across the country. It has torn about families and communities. Our nation has experienced almost 300 mass shootings this year alone. That’s thousands of lives lost. Guns are the number one killer of our children. No more, and we cannot have more hollow thoughts and prayers. We need action. I spoke on the House Floor to underscore the pain that too many families are experiencing and to implore my Republican colleagues to have the courage to come to the table on this critical issue to make our communities safer.

SPECTRUM INTERVIEW
I joined 'This Morning' on Spectrum News with Seth Lemon, where I discussed how Republican dysfunction is preventing our ability to govern for the American people. Already, we have seen how extreme MAGA Republicans have circumvented traditional process for their own political gains. I also spoke about the latest Trump indictment and the need to uphold and protect voting rights following SCOTUS’ ruling overturning Alabama’s extreme gerrymandering.

CARIBBEAN HERITAGE MONTH
June is Caribbean American Heritage Month, and I was proud to speak on the House Floor to honor the rich culture of Caribbean Americans and highlight the importance of celebrating the diversity of people across our nation. I am honored to serve alongside many Caribbean Americans in Congress and note the critical roles that Caribbean Americans have played in our country’s history. Our nation is a nation of immigrants – something the governor of Florida could stand to remember.

CONGRESSIONAL RENTERS CAUCUS
I stood with Congressmen Jimmy Gomez, Rob Menendez, and Dan Goldman to launch the first-ever Congressional Renters Caucus. Rent is too damn high. And too many Angelenos are rent burdened and struggle to keep a roof over their heads. I look forward to working with members of the Caucus and other colleagues to find sustainable pathways to affordable housing for people across our nation. No one should have to worry about providing safe and secure shelter for themselves and their families.

NEW LEGISLATION
I continue to introduce legislation with my colleagues to benefit Angelenos and those across our nation. I introduced a bipartisan House Resolution alongside Congressman Lawler and Congresswomen Cherfilus-McCormick and Salazar to renew the United States’ diplomatic efforts with Haiti. It is critical that we work together with our international partners to come together on a Haitian-led solution to address the political and humanitarian crises unfolding mere miles from our shore. In addition, I joined Congresswoman Salazar and Senators Wicker and Cantwell to reintroduce the Youth Coastal Fishing Program Act to establish funding for fisheries and marine science education for our youth.

INVESTING IN AMERICA AGENDA IN CALIFORNIA
The Biden-Harris Administration recently launched Invest.gov to widely publicize interactive maps with national, state, and local data that demonstrate the implementation of the Investing in America agenda, including the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. In addition, it provides data on private investments that these laws helped generate and the ways that these programs provide jobs and lower costs for Americans. It will be updated regularly as House Democrats continue to make sure these programs reach Americans across the nation to propel us into the future of innovation and improved infrastructure. MEDI-CAL RENEWAL PROCESS
Medi-Cal has resumed its renewal process as of April 1, 2023, aiming to redetermine eligibility for approximately 15 million Californians. An estimated two to three million enrollees are expected to no longer be eligible for Medi-Cal and may qualify for alternative coverage options, including Covered California.
