Girls basketball has a strong start to the season

The Lady Sheiks basketball team has had an outstanding start to the season, starting 9-0 and dominating their opponents.

So far, they’ve had convincing wins in almost all of their matchups, beating both league and non-league opponents. Their most notable win came on Nov. 17, in a rivalry game against Bernstein. They dominated with a 28 point victory with a final score of 62-34.

Hollywood is currently first in the league standings, with other schools such as Roybal and Mendez being the closest behind. The most impressive feat of this so far undefeated season being that they are 6-0 in away games, clearly not bothered by the hostility of an away crowd and staying focused.

“The team went into the year confident with a positive record in mind, and that they get better with everyday practice.” said Captain Nadia Rios.  The starting point guard has shined for the team so far leading her team with every step.

Their most recent game came on Dec. 8 with a thrilling come from behind victory over their league opponent RFK Community Bobcats.

Head Coach Wendy Carter is in her third season coaching and has produced winning seasons, with another one in mind.

As of Dec. 6, out of 180 teams in the city section, Hollywood is ranked 15th, an incredibly high position, up there with some of the best teams in the city. At this pace, they are sure to make a strong push into the playoffs and make some noise.
