WASHINGTON, DC – On June 23, 2023, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement ahead of this Saturday, which marks one year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, upending decades of precedent and triggering abortion bans across the country:
“Nearly one year ago, the Supreme Court rendered a corrupt decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, resulting in the worst attack on bodily autonomy and reproductive rights in our history.
“The stories that have come out in the past year are chilling and should concern everyone. Young girls forced to carry their babies to term, even in cases of rape; women who have lost their babies and told to wait for infection before they could get the care they needed; or women who have nearly died because they could not terminate their pregnancies properly. These stories of pain, trauma, and horror are not draconian fiction – they are the realities of women and girls in the United States of America.
“To talk about abortion rights is to also talk about reproductive oppression. With 14 states enacting total abortion bans, millions of Black women and women of color face even more barriers to health care. In a country that has already over criminalized and over surveilled Black and Brown women, the Dobbs decision was yet another blow to equality, fairness, and justice for women of color.
“The Republican agenda is not a pro-life agenda since they do not care about the lives they are destroying for political gain. This week, I joined House Democrats to sign a discharge petition to bring the Women’s Health Protection Act to the House Floor. However, Republicans refuse to listen to the needs of the American people and will not bring this legislation up for a vote. We cannot allow Republicans to continue their assault on our constitutional freedoms.
“I will not stop fighting until the protections offered under Roe are enacted for all women once and for all.”
