WASHINGTON, DC – On July 4, 2023, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement in recognition of Independence Day:

“This Independence Day, we remember our nation’s founding promise of liberty and justice and the brave men and women who have fought valiantly to uphold our values of democracy at home and abroad. Throughout our history, Americans have taken risks and made sacrifices in pursuit of the powerful idea of a more perfect union. The idea of a stronger democracy. The idea that we are entitled to fundamental freedoms. Yet every day, this idea is imperiled.

“Freedom looks different this holiday. Our basic constitutional rights are in jeopardy as we navigate an era of draconian setbacks to our most fundamental liberties. Just days ago, the Supreme Court rendered decisions that restricted freedom to education, employment, and service for millions of Americans. In my home state of California, the future of reparations is in question.

“While we celebrate the Fourth of July, we must recognize that the threats to our democracy are present and real. A blatant disregard for the American people was recently affirmed by a Court facing a legitimacy crisis and by dysfunctional House Republican leadership that continues to introduce legislation that serves special interests. Our nation has strayed from its founding principle of equal opportunity for all, and we must work to remedy this devastating reality.

“Whether you commemorate today at a fireworks display or a parade, I join Americans across the nation in uplifting the voices, often from vulnerable communities, who have worked tirelessly to preserve the values we hold dear. We must remain resilient in our fight to secure freedoms for all in the face of continued assaults on our liberties.”
