On Tuesday, June 11, USC will host the inaugural Music, Health, and Policy Conference as part of Los Angeles County Arts and Health Week. The event will take place at Cammilleri Hall on the University Park Campus.

Research has demonstrated music's significant role in childhood development and addressing cognitive decline in the elderly. Studies indicate that music education enhances cognitive development and emotional well-being among K-12 students. For older individuals, music has been utilized to assist patients with dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease in recalling memories.

The conference will concentrate on these research areas. Experts from USC, other universities, and community organizations will discuss the latest findings on music education's impact on childhood development and its effects on aging.

This research is underscored by California Proposition 28, passed in 2022 to provide additional funding for arts and music education in all California K-12 public schools.
