Rep. Jimmy Gomez, who has been serving California's 34th district in the U.S. Congress since 2017, recently shared a series of tweets addressing economic concerns related to new tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump and the response from Canada.

On March 4, 2025, Rep. Gomez questioned the potential impact of these tariffs on the economy, highlighting a forecast by the Atlanta Federal Reserve which predicted a negative GDP growth rate of -2.8% for the first quarter of 2025. He noted that Canada's retaliatory tariffs could further complicate economic conditions: "How bad will the economy get before Trump & @HouseGOP change course? If ever? Before the Trump Tariffs on Mexico and Canada took effect today, the @AtlantaFed forecast a -2.8% GDP growth in Q1 2025. Canada just retaliated with their own tariffs on the U.S."

Later that day, Rep. Gomez criticized Trump's new tariffs as an unavoidable financial burden on American families: "Trump’s new tariffs are basically a $1,200 annual subscription to higher prices—on groceries, cars, and electronics." He expressed concern over rising costs affecting working families.

In another tweet posted on March 4th, Gomez made a remark about President Elon Musk's absence from speaking engagements: "Surprised that President Elon Musk is not the one speaking at the podium tonight."
